Write this down on a Post-it note and stick it here:
Which of my strengths lead to wealth?
#3. Make a long list of what youâre not good at. Start by writing down the things that give you that ache when you consider what it might take to get rich at what you do best. You envision the headaches of running things. Write down how youâre bad at managing people. You get hot flashes thinking of the paperwork. Write down that youâre bad with numbers.
Remember how self-made millionaires tend to make a very short list of what they do best? Well, theyâre much more proficient at rattling of all the things they do badly.
A lot of people who wish they were rich are just too proud to admit they stink at some things. And not admitting what you stink at can really hold you back. There are only so many hours in a day. Waste your time with things youâre bad at and youâll never get ahead.
Really great entrepreneurs are often very interesting people with a strong contradiction in their personalities. As a rule, they are very sure of themselves and may seem arrogant when they talk about what they know. But these same people will happily count of with no shame at all the many things theyâre terrible at.
âEntrepreneurs can seem very humble in some surprising ways,â says Leann Mischel, a former corporate executive who now teaches entrepreneurship at Susquehanna University in Pennsylvania. âOver time, they get better at identifying what they donât do well, because they see positive results from handing those tasks over to true experts.â
This list of what you do poorly is your list of what you must do less of, consciously, if you are ever going to meet your goals. These are the tasks and responsibilities you want to hand of to employees and partners. If you donât worry about them, youâll have more time to focus on what you do best. Eventually, youâll need to find the best people whose strengths complement your own. For now, just write down the list of all the things you do badly but that need to get done if you are going to succeed.
If the list has fewer than ten items, you need to try harder.
